Finding a notary when you need one can sometimes be challenging. One positive outcome of the COVID-19 pandemic was the realization of how technology can facilitate business transactions when in-person meetings are not possible. Whether you are unable to meet with a notary due to mobility or transportation limitations, or you simply prefer the convenience of staying home, I am now offering Remote Ink-Signed Notarization (RIN) and Remote Online Notary (RON) services. What is the difference between RIN and RON?

Remote Ink-Signed Notarization (RIN)

RIN requires the notary to watch the signer "wet ink" or physically sign a paper document over two-way audio-visual communication (such as Zoom) which is then sent over to the notary via email or in the cases where an original document is needed, mailed to the notary. The document is then notarized with "wet ink" and stamped before being returned to the client through either email or overnight mail. All parties must also be physically located in the State of Illinois during the transaction. I was introduced to this process during the COVID-19 pandemic when the governor signed an emergency order and as a paralegal, I performed several of these transactions for my attorneys. Although not as efficient as RON, this paper based option allows for less expensive option because there is no need for a RON platform which may charge additional fees.

Remote Online Notarization (RON)

Many states, including Illinois, have enacted Remote Online Notarization (RON) laws, which allow for face-to-face contact to be satisfied online using a combination of audio-visual technology, identity verification and digital audit trail technology to perform notarial acts meaning that the notary act can be performed for signers anywhere in the US as long as the notary is seated in the state where the RON commission is issued. In addition, RON allows notaries public to validate a signer’s identity securely and more efficiently, helping prevent fraud and reducing risk.

No matter which option you use, a properly performed RIN or RON has the same legal effect as a traditional, in-person notarization.
